IPL will expand to 12 teams
In 2021, Freddie Wilde, co-author of the book “Cricket 2.0,” shared a tweet about the views of Sanjog Gupta, the CEO of Star Sports, regarding the expansion of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Gupta expressed his thoughts on expanding the IPL to a 10-team tournament, emphasizing that it would benefit Indian cricket, maximize its value, and cater to the fans.
Gupta stated, “I think two new IPL teams for sure. There cannot be a better time for the IPL to expand for the good of Indian cricket, for maximizing value, and for fans. It is absolutely the right time for the IPL to expand.”
He also mentioned that over a span of ten years, the IPL could potentially have 12 teams participating, extending the tournament duration to three and a half months.
Comparing the IPL to other leagues like Major League Baseball and the National Basketball Association, Gupta suggested the possibility of incorporating preseason or All-Star games as showpiece events abroad to enhance the popularity of the IPL. This aligns with the trend followed by these leagues.
Additionally, the tweet mentioned that a Women’s IPL would be launched in the 2022-23 season, indicating the growth and development of women’s cricket in conjunction with the IPL.
