The T20 tournament, which brings together legendary cricketers worldwide to promote road safety, was scheduled to be held from September 23 to October 1 at the Uptonsteel County Ground in Leicester. However, the organizers have now called off this year’s event due to unforeseen logistical challenges.

The announcement came via an official media statement issued by the Leicestershire County Cricket Club, the host venue for the 2023 tournament.

According to the statement, despite extensive planning over the past few months, certain logistic issues have forced the organizers to put off the event.

There is no clarity yet on the exact nature of these logistical bottlenecks that led to the indefinite postponement.

However, the statement did confirm that the organizers are actively working to reschedule the tournament in 2024.

The next edition of the Road Safety World Series will hopefully take place at the same venue in Leicester next year. Further updates regarding the 2024 event will be shared once the organizers finalize the plans.

Road Safety World Series aims to spread awareness of road safety through cricket

For the uninitiated, the Road Safety World Series is a T20 cricket competition aimed at raising awareness about road safety and accident prevention. The tournament made its debut in 2020 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai but had to be discontinued midway due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The unique event brings together former international cricketers from India, Australia, England, Sri Lanka, West Indies and other nations.

Cricket legends like Sachin Tendulkar, Brian Lara, Wasim Akram, and Muttiah Muralitharan are among some of the stars featured in previous editions.

While providing entertainment to fans, the Road Safety Series uses the mass appeal of cricket to highlight the importance of responsible road usage.

Speeding, drunk driving, and reckless overtaking are some of the issues it aims to address. The objective is to inspire people, especially the youth, to adopt safer driving habits and prevent needless accidents.

Pakistan were set to make their debut in 2023 edition

Notably, Pakistan was set to make its debut in the 2023 Road Safety World Series before the postponement. Along with the usual participants like India, Australia, England, and Sri Lanka, the Pakistan veterans team was to join the event this year.

Fans were eager to see Pakistan legends like Inzamam-ul-Haq, Shoaib Akhtar, and Shahid Afridi in action alongside batsmen from other nations. But they will now have to wait at least one more year for Pakistan’s maiden appearance in the competition.

The indefinite postponement has come as a huge disappointment for both cricketers and fans who were awaiting the Road Safety World Series eagerly. However, the organizers seem determined to bring back the event in 2024.

Hopefully, the logistical challenges would be resolved by then allowing the tournament to spread its important message through the spirit of cricket.
