The Asia Cup 2023 is underway, with the continent’s top cricket teams facing off for the prestigious title. Hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka, the 16th edition of the Asia Cup began on August 30th and will conclude with the final on September 17th.
Organized by the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), this year’s tournament features 6 teams – Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Nepal.
After a round-robin group stage, the top 2 teams from each of the 2 groups will progress to the Super 4 round. The ultimate champion will be determined based on standings after the Super 4 matches.
The Asia Cup is being held in multiple countries for the first time, with Pakistan hosting 4 games in Multan and the remaining 9 matches being played across 2 cities in Sri Lanka – Colombo and Kandy.
Pakistan kicked off their home leg of the tournament in style, crushing newcomers Nepal by a mammoth 238 runs. Batting first after winning the toss,
Pakistan posted a daunting 342/6 on the back of captain Babar Azam’s brilliant 151. Azam displayed his class with 14 fours and 4 sixes in his 131-ball innings.
Nepal never got going in the chase and was bowled out for just 104 in the 24th over.
The tournament has brought together some of the biggest superstars of Asian cricket. Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and other Indian batsmen will be looking to get back in form.
Meanwhile, Babar Azam, Pakistan’s batting sensation, will aim to lead from the front. Afghanistan’s ace spinners Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman pose a major threat to any batting lineup.
