Cricket Australia has announced the schedule for the upcoming 2023-24 Big Bash League season. The 13th edition of the BBL will kick off on December 7th with a match between Brisbane Heat and Melbourne Stars at The Gabba in Brisbane.
The tournament will feature its new-look format this season with changes to the number of games and the knockout stage.
The 8 BBL teams will each play 10 home and away matches, down from 14 games per team last season. This brings the total number of league-stage matches to 40, reduced from 56 previously.
The top 2 teams at the end of the league stage will earn direct entry into the BBL final. The 3rd and 4th placed teams will feature in the ‘Eliminator’ match, with the winner proceeding to the ‘Qualifier 2’ match.
The loser of ‘Qualifier 1’ between the top 2 teams will face off against the winner of the ‘Eliminator’ in ‘Qualifier 2’.
These changes bring the BBL knockout stage into line with the format used in the Indian Premier League. It provides the top 2 teams with a second chance should they lose their first knockout match.
There will also be fewer doubleheaders and no matches on Christmas Day this BBL season. Cricket Australia aims to schedule more high-profile games in primetime TV slots.
The 13th BBL season will run from December into late January 2024. The schedule sees the first knockout matches on January 19, with ‘Qualifier 1’ between the top 2 teams. ‘Eliminator’ and ‘Qualifier 2’ will occur on January 20th and 22nd respectively. The BBL 2023-24 final will close out the tournament on January 24th.
